Camden Market 50th Anniversary
A commemorative mural to mark the 50th of Camden Market, by David Shillinglaw, with windows into 3 other artists (including me!), the mural shows Camden as seen through multiple perspectives, honouring the history, music, landmarks and people that have been part of our story since the very beginning.
As a child I remember going for canal boat rides as a child between the lock and London zoo, which was a real treat. I have always had a fascination with water and boats. Although I grew up not far from the River Lea which I now live right next to, we never went there growing up and Camden lock was my first glimpse of London's canal network. The pirate castle and further down the barge shaped like a Chinese Junk seemed like things out of a storybook and I remember thinking that having a house with a garden backing onto the canal must be the coolest thing ever.
London's unexpected quieter green spaces like this have continued to be really important to me as a nature loving soul that can find the hustle and bustle of city life both exhilarating but overwhelming at times! At one time I was commuting by bike 9 miles each way and used back routes, including this section of the canal and it was the best way to begin and end my long work days.
